Founded in 1988, University Aberta is the public higher education institution in Portugal. Due to its vocation and nature, University Aberta offers, anywhere in the world, higher education (undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees) and Lifelong Learning courses, in distance learning, in the elearning mode, asserting itself through use of digital technologies and innovative, inclusive and sustainable teaching practices.
In 2008, through the recognition of its Virtual Pedagogical Model®, the Open University is considered a European reference institution, in the advanced domain of elearning and online learning. Since then, the commitment to quality has been a constant, as evidenced by the various awards received: in 2016, recognition by EFQM with the award of 4 stars in the 2nd Level of Excellence Recognized for Excellence; in 2017 the certification of Standard 27001 by the Portuguese Certification Association recognizing the security of its elearning platform and in 2019 the first Portuguese university to be distinguished for good practices in the areas of innovation and sustainability in higher education, having received the Bronze Seal from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. In 2018 she was also awarded as an Honorary Member of the Order of Merit by the President of the Portuguese Republic.
Today, the 2030 Agenda and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Europe 2020 Strategy, the European Union's agenda for the modernization of universities, the renewed Agenda for Higher Education, the 2020 Framework Program, Horizon Europe and Erasmus + Program and yet and above all, the Legal Regime for Distance Learning imposes an active and decisive role on the Open University.
