University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro
The University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) was born in March 1986. However, its history goes back to the beginning of the seventies, in a period of government opening aimed at correcting regional asymmetries and which resulted in the creation , in 1973, from the Polytechnic Institute of Vila Real (IPVR), whose first classes started in December 1975, with 40 students. This Institute, which in its early days functioned in different physical spaces in the city, ended up fixing the bulk of its activity in the current Quinta de Prados, assumed, from the start, a relevant role in the development not only of its original district but of all the Northern Interior of Portugal, opening paths of growth that involved the entire civil society. This dynamic led to its elevation, in 1979, to the University Institute of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (IUTAD), and, less than ten years later, due to the universal recognition of its intense activity in the fields of teaching and research. scientific and technological, allowed the Government to raise the Institution to the category of University.
